Abstract
This study aimed to investigate gender- and role-based differences in trunk coordination strategies by comparing male and female dancers during couple performances of the Rumba in dancesport. Ten experienced dance couples (n = 20, with over five years of training) performed a standardized Rumba routine, which was divided into four phases (P1–P4) for repeated execution. Three-axis angular velocity data were collected from the trunk (T1) and pelvis (PSIS) using inertial measurement units (IMUs). Continuous Relative Phase (CRP) values were computed by applying a Hilbert transform to the angular velocity signals, and coordination types were classified based on phase angle ranges: in-phase (≤67.5°), intermediate-phase (67.5°–112.5°), and anti-phase (≥112.5°). The results revealed that despite performing identical movements, male and female dancers exhibited distinct coordination strategies. Male dancers tended to maintain segmented coordination (anti-phase dominant) of the trunk and pelvis during rotation and forward–backward movements, demonstrating clear control as leaders. In contrast, female dancers generally adopted more integrated in-phase coordination, facilitating flexible transitions and responsiveness in their follower role. These findings reflect technical expression differences by gender within partner dancing. This study serves as an initial attempt to analyze both intra-individual and inter-partner coordination in dancesport, and it is expected to contribute foundational data for developing objective performance evaluation criteria. However, limitations include the use of descriptive-level analysis and potential measurement artifacts inherent to IMU data. Future studies applying more sophisticated time-series analysis methods with larger datasets may provide deeper insights into coordination mechanisms.
